What brought you to a career of leadership in the HR space?
I have joked with every team that I have led that I learned everything I know about management and leadership as a summer camp counselor! 🙂 I started my formal HR career as an HR Assistant, learning about process and administration. From there I built client and generalist skills. I was blessed to have several fabulous managers/mentors who encouraged me to “get my day job done and then reach for anything else I found interesting”. That led me to several specialist HR experiences in Learning and Development, Compensation and Corporate Projects. Getting my MBA helped me to build my business acumen. All of these experiences helped me to become a well-rounded HR practitioner, partner and leader.
What are the moments that have provided the most professional satisfaction?
I do my best work when I am building or improving processes and/or situations in HR or with my business partner. Bringing teams together to align on opportunities and collaborate to solve problems is something that I enjoy and I’d like to think is a bit of a superpower. Coming together to make an impact for employees, customers or patients is particularly rewarding.
What do you see as the most important initiatives in the future of HR, Operations, and the TA space?Â
Technology has been an important driver of innovation and enablement in HR for the entirety of my career. With the many advancements in AI, that will continue at an even faster pace. I think what will be most important is understanding that AI requires strong underlying processes, clear objectives, and figuring out how we can keep the human in human resources.
Looking back at your career, what experiences are the most significant to you shaping how you lead today?
I believe that part of being an effective leader depends on your ability to learn from experiences and grow. I am a product of every decision and experience up to this point. I’ve learned as much from the worst leader I’ve ever had, as I did from the best leader. Every day I show up with a curious mind, consideration for others, and an intention to move the business forward.
